Hi.

Welcome to Tofu Bunny.
Here I chronicle all my vegan explorations in the San Francisco Bay Area, along with other assorted plant-based adventures in my backyard.

Flacos opened their brick and mortar location in 2010, after years of selling tamales and taquitos at the Berkeley Farmers Market—where I first encountered them. I couldn’t believe it: vegan taquitos?? I had been making my own for years, but honestly, Flacos taquitos are way better.

Their shop isn’t shiny and elegant, but it’s homey and whenever I’m there, I feel just…. happy. I grew up eating my mom’s taquitos (so not vegan) and other Mexican delights, and I pretty much need Mexican food at least one week—even just a simple bean-and-rice burrito with some guac and chips will do; but now, with Flacos, I can have tamales, taquitos, tacos, pozole, and more.  Flacos serve all their dishes with an avocado salsa—your choice of either mild or hot. WATCH OUT FOR THE HOT ONE. I know my taste buds are a little sensitive to heat, but still. OUCH. But still, incredibly tasty.

Usually Cody and I get a taquito plate—that’s two taquitos (or tacos) with a salad, choice of beans, rice and salsa. Everything is available al a carte as well. For beverages, you can get jamaica (hibiscus tea) or horchata (rice drink).

(Also, they have many gluten-free options, so make sure you ask when you go. The taquitos are gluten-free—the filling is soy protein.)

Flacos is so good, that we had them cater our day-after-wedding party at our house. We had so many dang taquitos, that Cody and I were eating them for days! I remember drinking Champagne and crunchy leftover taquitos under an umbrella in our yard as it rained….. Oh gosh, that was a little….annoying, I’m sorry! But you see what I mean? Flacos food is so good that it might make you feel a little ooey gooey on the inside! So, when you go, make sure you get a few extra taquitos and some green salsa for later.  You won’t regret it.
