Hi.

Welcome to Tofu Bunny.
Here I chronicle all my vegan explorations in the San Francisco Bay Area, along with other assorted plant-based adventures in my backyard.

Potala is a macrobiotic restaurant—wait! WAIT! Don’t let that scare you—trust me! This food has actual flavor—and Chef Tenzin (formally of Shangri-La Cafe in Oakland) uses garlic, ginger, basil and other herbs and seasonings in the sauces and dressings to make his food stand out from the regular macrobiotic fare.

The menu changes daily, but is always a prix fixe; you’re only choices are the size of the meal (medium or large), or a “simple meal” which is basically the same thing only without seasoning. All dishes are also available a la carte.

The meal always starts with a soup, and then moves on to a plate of food. Tender brown rice is in the middle, along with a salad, some kind of protein (usually a bean dish), cooked greens often with a sauce,  and a cooked vegetable dish.

What I love about Potala, is that whenever I go, I always forget how good the food is. I mean, it’s super-healthy, and that’s probably why I don’t go as often as I should (um, and why I should go more often!); but it also tastes good. Often Cody will say ‘let’s go to Potala for lunch,’ and I’ll say “um…. What about Hella Vegan Eats??’ And then we’ll go to Potala and I’ll think to myself ‘damn, this is really tasty; why don’t we come here more often?’

The dining room is simple, but cheery. You don’t really have a server; just the chef or another person in the kitchen who will ask you what size of plate you’d like to order. Hot tea and water is self-serve, but you can ask for a glass of organic wine or for something in the dessert case (usually cookies). It’s an easy place to go as a sole diner; the vibe is open and there is a feeling of stillness in room, if that makes any sense. It’s peaceful; it’s gentle. No, really. I know it sounds silly; but go and check it out.

So next time you are in North Berkeley/Albany area, check out Potala; you won’t regret it. The dining room isn’t anything fancy, but the food is always delicious. And, as a total bonus, it’s healthy. It’s a total WIN!
